Production of bespoke steel doors usually takes from 4 to 12 weeks after you approve the production drawings, depending on the size and complexity of the order. Portamet is an original manufacturer. Every steel door is designed, welded, ground, powder-coated and glazed in-house at our own factory in Gdańsk, Poland, by our own team of qualified welders. What types of steel doors do you make?

We manufacture the full range of steel doors for interior and exterior use: single and double (French) steel doors, bespoke steel doors, arched steel doors, bi-fold steel doors, sliding and pocket steel doors, pivot doors, glazed steel partitions and fire-rated steel doors. Matching steel windows are also available.

Can steel doors be used as exterior and front doors?

Yes. For exterior doors we use thermally broken steel profile systems – including Ottostumm FerroFinestra W50 TB, W75 TB, Jansen, Forster and Secco Sistemi – with insulated glazing and multi-point locking systems. They are suitable for front doors, garden doors and patio doors.

What is the difference between Crittall-style doors and steel doors?

Crittall is a British brand name that is often used to describe any slim, black steel-framed glazed door. "Crittall-style" doors are steel doors made in this heritage look – with narrow profiles and glazing bars. Portamet manufactures Crittall-style steel doors in-house, with profiles as slim as the classic W20, in any size, colour and glazing pattern.

Do steel doors have to be black?

No. Black (RAL 9005) is the most popular finish, but every Portamet door is powder-coated and available in any colour from the RAL palette, with no limitation. We also make steel doors in brass, stainless steel, raw black steel and Corten finishes.

What glass options are available for steel doors?

You can choose clear glass, laminated safety glass, tempered (toughened) glass, frosted or milky glass, fluted (reeded) glass and fire-resistant glass. Exterior doors are fitted with insulated glazing. Glazing bars can be arranged in any pattern to match your interior or the style of your building.

Do you make fire-rated steel doors?

Yes. We manufacture glazed FD30 and FD60 fire-rated steel doors for the UK market and EI30, EI60, EI90 and EI120 fire-rated steel doors classified to the European standard EN 13501-2. For projects in the USA or Canada that require UL-listed or NFPA 80 labelled fire doors, please contact us before ordering so we can confirm the requirements of your local building code.

How do I measure a door opening for steel doors?

Measure the opening in six places: the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height on the left, in the middle and on the right. If possible, also measure both diagonals. Openings are rarely perfectly square, so these measurements let us design a door that fits without problems. You can send dimensions in millimetres or inches.

Can I install steel doors myself?

Interior steel doors from our standard range are easy to install with basic tools – the frames come pre-drilled and are fixed directly to the wall, after which the door leaf is hung on its hinges. For exterior doors, large sliding or bi-fold systems and fire-rated doors we recommend a professional installer. We provide installation instructions and support, and can advise on installation options in your country.

When should steel doors be installed during a renovation?

Steel doors and glazed partitions should be installed at the final stage of a build or renovation – after the floors are laid and the walls are plastered and painted. This protects the powder-coated finish and the glass, and ensures the door fits the finished opening exactly.

Is the design included in the price?

Yes. Detailed production drawings are prepared free of charge once you accept the quote and pay the deposit. You review the drawings and can request changes before anything is produced – production only starts after your final approval.

How does the ordering process work?

1) You send your dimensions and requirements and receive a free quote. 2) After accepting it, you receive a proforma invoice for the deposit. 3) We prepare production drawings for your approval. 4) Your doors are manufactured in our factory in Gdańsk. 5) They are packed, insured and delivered to your address in Europe, the UK or North America.

What warranty do Portamet steel doors have?

Portamet steel doors are covered by a 2-year warranty on the steel frames and powder-coated finish and a the same warranty on hardware. Steel is one of the most durable door materials available – with welded frames and a quality powder coat, our doors are built to last for decades.
